Frequently Asked Questions
About Side
Side is one of the rare places where an ancient city and a holiday resort share the same streets. You can walk the colonnaded avenue of a Pamphylian port founded in the 7th century BC, then watch the columns of the Temple of Apollo turn gold at sunset. The pedestrianised old town, the sandy beaches and the fish restaurants around the harbour make it attractive for both culture and sea.
Highlights
- ◆ Temple of Apollo — the seafront columns that became the symbol of the region
- ◆ Side Ancient Theatre — seating 15,000-20,000, the largest in Pamphylia
- ◆ Colonnaded Street and Agora — an open-air museum in the middle of town
- ◆ Side Museum — housed in a Roman bath, with local statues and sarcophagi
- ◆ Side Harbour and Old Town — pedestrianised Roman streets, shops and cafés
- ◆ Titreyengöl — a lake in pine forest with quiet walking trails
Places to Visit
The tour of the ancient city begins at the monumental gate and continues along the colonnaded street, the agora and the theatre, ending at the Temple of Apollo on the tip of the peninsula. Manavgat Waterfall with a river boat trip, Köprülü Canyon rafting and Aspendos are the classic excursions from here.
Beaches and Sea
Long stretches of fine sand lie on both sides of Side. The western beach towards Kumköy is wider and livelier, while the eastern side towards Sorgun is quieter. The sea deepens gradually, making it suitable for families, and the area has numerous Blue Flag beaches.
Activities and Tours
Exploring the ruins, boat tours, diving and water sports lead the list. Manavgat Waterfall, Köprülü Canyon rafting, jeep safaris and ATV tours all run with transfers. At sunset, the area around the Temple of Apollo is the most photographed spot in the region.
Where to Stay, Eat and Shop
The peninsula has boutique hotels and guesthouses, while large all-inclusive resorts line the Çolaklı, Kumköy and Titreyengöl strip. Seafood restaurants, live-music venues and lounge bars fill the harbour and old town. Handmade jewellery, ceramics, leather and spices are the typical souvenirs.
When to Visit
May to October for the sea, and April to May plus September to October for exploring the ruins. There is little shade among the ruins, so in high summer visit early morning or late afternoon.
Transfer Tip
The airport is around 65 km away, a 55-70 minute drive. Traffic inside the ancient town is restricted, so for hotels on the peninsula your driver will meet you at the nearest accessible point.
