Frequently Asked Questions
About Kemer
Squeezed between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean, Kemer packs nature, ancient cities and nightlife into 52 kilometres of coast. Coves where pine forest reaches the water, a cable car climbing Mount Tahtalı and Lycian cities such as Phaselis and Olympos make it one of the most varied destinations in Antalya. The marina comes alive in the evening and Bar Street stays busy all season.
Highlights
- ◆ Phaselis Ancient City — a Lycian port whose three harbours merge with swimmable coves
- ◆ Olympos Cable Car — a ten-minute ride to the 2,365 m summit of Mount Tahtalı
- ◆ Yanartaş (Chimaera) — natural gas burning perpetually from the rocks above Çıralı
- ◆ Olympos Ancient City — ruins spread along a stream bed, ending at the beach
- ◆ Moonlight Beach — a long-standing Blue Flag beach beside the marina
- ◆ Yörük Park — an open-air ethnography site recreating nomadic culture
Places to Visit
Phaselis is one of the few ancient sites where you can swim among the ruins, spread as they are across three bays. The Tahtalı cable car runs 09:00-18:00 in summer and delivers a full Mediterranean panorama from the summit. Yanartaş above Çıralı is far more striking after dark, while the ruins of Olympos sit right beside the beach.
Beaches and Sea
Beaches here are generally a mix of fine pebble and sand rather than broad stretches of sand. Moonlight Beach, within walking distance of the centre, runs about 350 metres. Çıralı, Adrasan, Cleopatra Cove and the bays of Phaselis have the clearest water, and Çıralı is also a loggerhead turtle nesting site.
Activities and Tours
Boat tours call at Phaselis and Cleopatra Cove, while divers head for the Paris II wreck and the Three Islands. Jeep safaris, rafting, canyon tours, sections of the Lycian Way, parasailing and jet skiing are all widely available.
Where to Stay, Eat and Shop
Accommodation is mostly four and five-star all-inclusive hotels, with large resorts also in the Beldibi, Göynük, Kiriş, Çamyuva and Tekirova neighbourhoods. The area has the busiest nightlife in the region, with large clubs and a dedicated Bar Street. The marina and the central bazaar stay open late.
When to Visit
April to May and September to October are ideal for combining sightseeing with swimming. July and August are perfect for the sea but hot and crowded; take the cable car and canyon tours in the morning.
Transfer Tip
The airport is about 55 km from Kemer centre, a 45-60 minute drive. For outlying neighbourhoods such as Tekirova and Çamyuva allow 70-85 minutes, so give us the exact hotel name for accurate planning.
