Frequently Asked Questions
About Kalkan
Built on a hillside above its harbour, Kalkan is one of the most romantic towns on the Mediterranean, with white stone houses, bougainvillea-lined lanes and rooftop restaurants. Its villas with private pools have made it the centre of villa tourism in Turkey, and the atmosphere is calm and adult-oriented. Kaputaş Beach, the twelve-kilometre sands of Patara and Saklıkent Canyon are all close by.
Highlights
- ◆ Kalkan Harbour and Old Town — stone houses draped in bougainvillea and rooftop dining
- ◆ Kaputaş Beach — the turquoise cove reached by steps that has become the local symbol
- ◆ Patara Ancient City and Beach — a Lycian port and 12 km of fine sand
- ◆ Xanthos and Letoon — the Lycian capital and sanctuary on the UNESCO World Heritage list
- ◆ Saklıkent Canyon — walking through cold water between towering canyon walls
- ◆ Sea caves — the Blue Cave, Güvercin İni and İnbaş Cave
Places to Visit
Most visits start in the narrow lanes of the old town and its harbour. Kaputaş Beach lies on the road to Kaş, in a cove reached by a steep staircase. Patara deserves half a day for both its ruins and one of the longest beaches in Turkey, with Xanthos, Letoon and Saklıkent Canyon in the same direction.
Beaches and Sea
Kalkan has no wide beach of its own: apart from a small stony beach beside the harbour, the shore consists of beach clubs and platforms built into the hillside, with sun terraces, ladders into the sea and restaurant service. For sand, guests go to Patara; for a turquoise cove, to Kaputaş.
Activities and Tours
Boat tours take in the sea caves and coves. The sections of the Lycian Way around Kalkan are ideal for walking, while Patara offers surfing, Saklıkent canyon walks and Kaş-based diving. A calm holiday in a villa with a private chef is the style the town is known for.
Where to Stay, Eat and Shop
Accommodation is dominated by villas with private pools and boutique hotels; there are no large all-inclusive resorts. Dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking the sea is the signature experience of the old town. Nightlife is relaxed and music-led, and shopping means the boutiques around the harbour.
When to Visit
The season opens in May and runs to October. May is favoured for honeymoons thanks to its quiet, while September is the local favourite for warm water combined with low occupancy.
Transfer Tip
The airport is roughly 210-215 km away, a drive of three to three and a half hours. Villa addresses often sit on narrow, steep lanes, so adding the villa name and a location link to your booking note makes the meet & greet far easier.
