Frequently Asked Questions
About Alanya
Alanya combines a Seljuk heritage with the liveliest coastal scene in the region, and unlike purpose-built resorts it is a real city that lives all year. The castle rising 250 metres above the sea, the Red Tower guarding the harbour and the legendary Cleopatra Beach are its symbols. A wide range of hotels, busy nightlife and rich nature routes suit every budget and age.
Highlights
- ◆ Alanya Castle — a Seljuk fortress ringed by 6 km of walls with panoramic views
- ◆ Red Tower — an octagonal tower from 1226 with an ethnography museum inside
- ◆ Shipyard — the five-bay Seljuk dockyard built in 1228
- ◆ Cleopatra Beach — two kilometres of golden sand with a Blue Flag
- ◆ Damlataş Cave — the first cave in Turkey opened to tourism
- ◆ Dim River and Sapadere Canyon — icy water, platform restaurants and waterfalls
Places to Visit
The castle is best visited by taking the cable car up and walking back down, passing the Red Tower and the shipyard on the way. Damlataş Cave sits right beside Cleopatra Beach. Outside town, the platform restaurants on the Dim River and Sapadere Canyon, about an hour away, are the favourites of nature lovers.
Beaches and Sea
Cleopatra Beach runs for about two kilometres of fine golden sand, holds a Blue Flag and is free to enter. Damlataş Beach begins at the foot of the castle. To the west, İncekum and Avsallar are sandy, while towards Mahmutlar in the east the shore becomes increasingly pebbly.
Activities and Tours
Pirate-themed boat tours visiting the sea caves, diving, parasailing and water sports are everywhere. Jeep safaris, ATV rides, the Dim Cave, canyon walks and cultural tours round out the choice.
Where to Stay, Eat and Shop
Hotels range from boutique properties to large all-inclusive resorts, and prices are generally lower than in western Antalya. The region's most energetic nightlife is here: the harbour side is calm while Bar Street stays busy until the early hours. Alanya Bazaar, the covered market and weekly markets are the shopping favourites.
When to Visit
The swimming season runs from May to October and often stretches into early November. April to May and September to October are best for sightseeing and nature trips, while June to September is the height of the nightlife season.
Transfer Tip
The airport is roughly 125 km away, a drive of one hour 45 minutes to two hours. Because of the distance we plan these transfers with a comfort stop and generous luggage space; if you land at Gazipaşa Airport instead, the drive drops to about 45 minutes — just tell us when booking.
