About Kaş
Kaş is the diving capital of Turkey, a charming harbour town facing the Greek island of Meis. Bougainvillea covering whitewashed houses, a Lycian royal tomb standing in the middle of a shopping street and an ancient theatre overlooking the sea give it a Mediterranean atmosphere all of its own. Instead of large all-inclusive hotels you will find boutique properties and guesthouses, which is why independent travellers, divers and couples love it.
Highlights
- ◆ Antiphellos Ancient Theatre — within walking distance of the centre, a sunset favourite
- ◆ Lycian Royal Tomb — a monumental tomb rising in the middle of the old bazaar street
- ◆ Kekova and the Sunken City — a protected site with ruins beneath the water
- ◆ Kaleköy (Simena) — a car-free village with a castle and Lycian sarcophagi
- ◆ Kaputaş Beach — a turquoise cove reached by a steep flight of steps
- ◆ Dive sites — more than 30 spots including canyons, wrecks and caves
Places to Visit
A visit usually begins in the old bazaar with the Lycian Royal Tomb and ends with sunset at the ancient theatre. Boats leaving from Üçağız tour the sunken city at Kekova and the village of Kaleköy. The nearby ancient cities of Patara, Xanthos, Letoon and Myra — two of them UNESCO World Heritage sites — make excellent day trips, and the island of Meis is a 20-minute ferry ride away.
Beaches and Sea
There is almost no broad sandy beach here; the coast is made of pebble coves and swimming platforms. Küçük Çakıl is 300 metres from the centre, Büyük Çakıl is known for its sunsets and shallow İnceboğaz suits families with children. Kaputaş Beach, on the road towards Kalkan, is among the most photographed coves in Turkey.
Activities and Tours
Scuba diving and snorkelling are the signature activities, with wrecks, caves and reefs of international reputation. Kekova boat tours, sea kayaking, hiking the Lycian Way and paragliding from Mount Asas are the other favourites.
Where to Stay, Eat and Shop
Accommodation consists of boutique hotels converted from old Greek houses, guesthouses and small luxury properties on the Çukurbağ Peninsula. The meze-focused tavern culture is strong and defines dinner here. The old bazaar has boutique shops, ceramic workshops and crafts, and nightlife means live music around the harbour rather than clubs.
When to Visit
April to May for ancient sites and hiking, June to August for the sea. Those who know the region best prefer 20 September to 20 October, when the water is still warm and the crowds have gone.
Transfer Tip
The airport lies about 200 km away, a drive of two hours 45 minutes to three hours 15 minutes along the coast road. Because the route is long and winding we plan these transfers with a rest stop, and we assign a well-rested driver for night arrivals.
