About Antalya Merkez
The heart of Antalya is Kaleiçi, the walled old town on a small peninsula. Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman traces sit side by side on the same cobbled street, where restored mansions have become boutique hotels around a centuries-old marina. Perched on cliffs facing the Taurus Mountains, the old town lets you combine a culture trip and a beach day in the same afternoon.
Highlights
- ◆ Hadrian's Gate — a triple-arched monumental entrance built for Emperor Hadrian
- ◆ Yivli Minaret — the fluted Seljuk minaret that became the symbol of the city
- ◆ Kaleiçi Marina — the historic harbour where boat tours depart
- ◆ Hıdırlık Tower — a Roman monument and the best sunset spot in town
- ◆ Karaalioğlu Park — a clifftop park with sweeping views over the bay
- ◆ Antalya Museum — one of the richest collections in Turkey, famous for the Perge statues
Places to Visit
Start at Hadrian's Gate and follow the line of the Yivli Minaret, the Broken Minaret and the Clock Tower; the walk naturally takes you down to the marina. From there, boat trips reach the cliffs and the point where the Lower Düden Waterfall drops straight into the sea. The city is also the most practical base for day trips to the ancient sites of Perge, Aspendos and Termessos.
Beaches and Sea
Kaleiçi has no beach of its own — the shore here is a cliff face. The small Mermerli Beach inside the old town is a platform-style bathing spot. For proper swimming you reach pebbly Konyaaltı to the west or sandy Lara to the east in 10 to 20 minutes. Antalya holds more than 200 Blue Flag beaches, the highest number in the world.
Activities and Tours
Boat tours from the marina, museum visits, a three to four hour walk through the old town and a late-afternoon stroll along the cliffs are the classics here. Köprülü Canyon rafting, the Kurşunlu and Düden waterfalls and the Tünektepe cable car are all easy trips from the centre.
Where to Stay, Eat and Shop
Accommodation is mostly boutique hotels inside Kaleiçi plus city hotels; all-inclusive resorts are almost absent. Restaurants built into the old harbour wall serve dinner with a sea view, while the narrow lanes fill with cafés and shisha bars after dark. For shopping, head to Işıklar Avenue, MarkAntalya or the craft shops of the old town.
When to Visit
April to June and September to November are ideal for sightseeing, when the weather suits walking. In July and August daytime temperatures can reach 35 °C. Winters stay mild, so a city tour works all year round.
Transfer Tip
The airport is about 13-16 km from the city centre, 20-30 minutes in normal traffic. Vehicle access into Kaleiçi's narrow lanes is restricted, so your driver will drop you at the closest accessible point to your hotel and help with the luggage.
